Background of the Study
Radio drama has long been recognized as a powerful tool for social change, particularly in regions with high radio listenership and limited access to other media forms. In many African societies, including Nigeria, radio drama combines entertainment and education, leveraging storytelling to address pressing social issues such as health, education, gender equality, and civic responsibility. Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State, characterized by a mix of urban and rural settings, provides a fertile ground for exploring the transformative potential of radio drama. Research by Obinna and Adewale (2023) highlights that radio drama fosters community engagement by presenting relatable narratives that resonate with local audiences. Moreover, the participatory nature of radio programming often encourages listeners to adopt new behaviors and attitudes. However, the extent to which radio drama has catalyzed measurable social change in Ankpa LGA remains underexplored. This study investigates the impact of radio drama in influencing social norms, behaviors, and attitudes in the area, offering a nuanced understanding of its role in driving social transformation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread popularity of radio drama in Nigeria, its effectiveness in driving social change in Ankpa LGA has not been adequately documented. Many communities in the area continue to grapple with issues such as low literacy rates, gender inequality, and public health challenges, raising questions about the impact of media interventions. Studies by Okafor and Musa (2024) suggest that while radio drama has the potential to effect change, its impact is often constrained by factors such as poor production quality, limited audience reach, and inadequate follow-up mechanisms. In Ankpa LGA, where cultural norms and traditional beliefs significantly influence behavior, the role of radio drama in challenging these norms and promoting progressive attitudes is critical yet understudied. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the effectiveness of radio drama in fostering social change in Ankpa LGA, identifying key challenges, and recommending strategies for improvement.

By identifying the factors that enhance or hinder the effectiveness of radio drama, the study offers practical recommendations for optimizing its use in promoting positive social outcomes. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of culturally relevant storytelling in engaging communities and fostering sustainable change.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to the impact of radio drama on social change within Ankpa LGA, Kogi State. It examines the influence of radio drama on social norms and behaviors, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with its use. Findings are specific to the sampled LGA and may not be generalizable to other regions.
